Making Process - Real Oxford Scenes

< Title: Real Oxford Scenes
   Medium: coloured pencil on paper

The style of this drawing is reminiscent of story-book illustrations. The still-life drawing in the foreground was an untouched image of my desk, tapping into the message that such scenes represent the reality of Oxford life. However, the proportion of the portraits relative to the objects was increased, to emphasise the significance of friends in this mad Oxford life.

Making Process - A Youthful Mind

< Title: A Youthful Mind
Medium: black pen and white coloured pencil on paper

In this artwork, detail was used when drawing the man’s face, which decreases down the figure. The intention of this technique is to draw focus to the man’s head and not his disabled body. Background patterns represent the complexity and intricacy of the man’s thoughts, so these were also placed near the head. In deciding what kind of patterns to draw, I experimented with creating different designs, two of which are depicted below. White pencil was primarily used on the man's hair, to bring emphasis to his old age. The creases of the skin were also highlighted through the contrast between black pen and white coloured pencil (see detail below).
